"A masterful work ... the film takes on the air of a fairytale, a quality aided no doubt by the fact that much of it unfurls from the child's point of view." – Senses of Cinema

In Philippe Garrel's (Regular Lovers, 2005; That Summer, MIFF 2012) latest film, Louis, a struggling 30-year-old actor, leaves his girlfriend and the mother of his daughter to be with another woman. While still maintaining a relationship with his child, Louis moves in with his new love, the impulsive Claudia (Anna Mouglalis). Poor and living in a small apartment, the lovers soon find their romance susceptible to the ravages of professional frustration, routine and betrayal.

Played by the director's son Louis, the character of Louis is also a representation of Garrel's father, the now-departed actor Maurice Garrel; the story is based on events Philippe recalled from his childhood – here, embodied in the character of Louis' daughter.

Shooting in his characteristic glorious black and white, from veteran cinematographer Willy Kurant (Masculin Feminine, MIFF 2014), and channelling the more whimsical spirit of the French New Wave, one of France's most striking directors has produced one of his most accessible films.

"Jealousy is a wickedly ironic palimpsest that sketches present-day Paris onto passions of past decades." – The New Yorker
