Sweden, 2011 (MIFF 2012, Facing North: Swedish Cinema in Focus)

Director: Levan Akin

“This tonally razor-sharp debut by helmer Levan Akin oozes authenticity and filmmaking savoir-faire.” - Variety

An acutely observed ensemble piece about a dinner party that goes off the rails, Certain People centres on a group of self-absorbed, arty thirty-somethings set to enjoy a high-quality weekend away. But the hostess's brother arrives unexpectedly, accompanied by a tawdry blonde bombshell whose forthright lack of manners and outspoken behaviour result in an amusingly neurotic powerplay between these uptight bohemians that inevitably gives way to prejudices being exposed, alcohol-fuelled confessions and cutting personal attacks.

Filmed on the idyllic island of Gotland in the height of summer, Certain People has a dreamy romanticism to it, aided by a jazzy score and strong performances from its young ensemble of up-and-coming Swedish stars.

“A breathtaking virtuosity of execution.” - Variety
