Sweden / UK, 2012 (MIFF 2012, Facing North: Swedish Cinema in Focus)

Director: Malik Bendjelloul

“A hugely entertaining, emotionally touching and musically revelatory experience.” - Indiewire

One of the greatest 70s folk-rock musicians you've never heard, Rodriguez was briefly hailed as a successor to Dylan, releasing two critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful albums - Cold Fact and Coming From Reality - before slipping into obscurity. And despite talk of his untimely death, nobody cared. Or so it seemed.

In apartheid-era South Africa, however, Rodriguez's soulful, folksy protest tunes struck a chord and even though some of them were banned from the airwaves he still sold more than Elvis - all without ever knowing. Decades later, when two fans set out to learn the truth about him, they uncover a story more incredible than they ever imagined as Swedish director Malik Bendjelloul captures their journey in a film that is, ultimately, about the transformative power of music.

Premiering at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the World Cinema Audience Award: Documentary and a Special Jury Prize, Searching for Sugar Man is an enchanting audience-pleaser.

Director Malik Bendjelloul is a guest of the festival.
