BEYOND

Sweden, 2010 (MIFF 2012, Facing North: Swedish Cinema in Focus)

Director: Pernilla August

"Such a powerful drama, so grittily and convincingly carried by its faultless cast." - Screen Daily

Acclaimed Swedish actress Pernilla August makes her debut behind the camera with this tense drama that charts the lasting effects felt by children raised in troubled households.

Living happily with her husband and two children, Leena (Noomi Rapace, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Prometheus) has left her past and the pain of her parents' alcoholism behind her. The peace is shattered when Leena learns her mother is ill and in need of her help. Reluctantly, Leena travels with her family to see her, and August fills in the blanks with flashbacks that paint a harrowing picture of the life of young Leena (Tehilla Blad).

Winner of the International Critics' Week Award at the Venice Film Festival as well as the Nordic Council Film Prize, Beyond is a moving piece of cinema, which shows that despite the pain of facing up to one's personal history, redemption can be found in accepting it.

“A simultaneously restrained, gut-wrenching, but hopeful feature debut." - Hollywood Reporter
