THE ROBBER

Austria / Germany, 2009 (MIFF 2010, International Panorama)

Director: Benjamin Heisenberg

The real-life tale of a man driven to extremes in pursuit of the ultimate adrenaline high.

Based on real events and adapted from Martin Prinz's novel, this film tells the story of a man committed to twin pleasures - bank robbery and physical exercise.

Driven by the need for a high, for attention and ultimately for love, Johann Rettenberger became the most wanted criminal in Austria in the 1980s, sparking one of the biggest police operations since World War II. The Robber is an exercise in setting and breaking limitations, both physical and psychological, as the protagonist propels himself ever forward in a state of perpetual motion, moving closer and closer towards his final destination.
