South Korea, 2000 (MIFF 2001, Regional Focus)

Director: Park Chan-wook

At a border post between North and South Korea, three soldiers are dead and the two surviving witnesses to their killing have attempted suicide. Into a potentially explosive situation steps investigator Jang. Swiss/Korean Jang has been selected as a neutral party qualified to unravel a mystery that may soon spark war between Asian superpowers. This no-nonsense woman sets about recreating the events leading to the slaying and uncovers a secretive scenario that neither faction could have imagined.

An official selection at the 2001 Berlin Film Festival. Joint Security Area played to packed houses and racked up close to two million attendances in Seoul in Its first month. It was shot on the most expensive set in Korean film history, accurately reproducing the notorious 'Bridge Of No Return' that separates the two nations. With its immaculate wide-screen cinematography, nail-biting script and incredibly energetic performances, this phenomenal example of modern Korean cinema is a Festival must-see.

"Joint Security Area has hit the contemporary pulse with bulls-eye accuracy"-Variety
