THE TAO OF STEVE

USA, 2000 (MIFF 2000, International Panorama)

Director: Jenniphr Goodman

Ten years after graduation, Dex has gained a few pounds. Friends who come across him at a college reunion wonder what became of the chopper ridin' lady killer they remember from University. But make no mistake, tubby, and dressing solely in a succession of garish Hawaiian shirts, Dex is still a hit with women.

First-time director Jenniphr Goodman was inspired by a friend, Duncan North, a portly fellow whose success rate with women she found amazing. Goodman prodded North into revealing his secrets and collaborating on the outstanding and riotously comic script of The Tao of Steve.

Espousing a philosophy that combines ancient wisdom with the natural coolness of Steve McQueen, Steve McGarrett (Hawaii 5-0) and Steve Austin (The Six Million Dollar Man), Dex is legendary. His troubles begin, however, with Syd the first woman who seems to be immune to his spell. A charming and prodigiously funny film. Utterly delightful.
