WELCOME TO THE STICKS (M)

France, 2008 (MIFF 2008, International Panorama)

Director: Dany Boon

The heartwarming comedy that became the biggest box office smash in French history.

In an attempt to cheer up his depressed wife, postal worker Philippe tries to scam a transfer from his comfortable life in Salon-de-Provence to a seaside town down south - and is caught red-handed. His punishment: banishment to a postal outpost far north in the unknown town of Bergues. He reluctantly prepares himself for ‘French Siberia', a land of drunks and rednecks, all of who speak Ch'ti - an indecipherable dialect mixture of French, Latin and Flemish.

A hilarious story of local pride and far-fetched prejudices that seamlessly weaves comic action and sight gags with linguistic humour, Welcome to the Sticks is the latest feature from writer-director and humourist Dany Boon (Dream House).
